A four-wheeler hit the Martyrs’ Memorial (Shahid Stambh) in Valpoi town on Thursday evening, causing partial damage to the structure. No injuries were reported.
According to locals, a pickup truck was travelling from Valpoi towards Honda when the driver lost control at around 4 pm and crashed into the protective railing of the memorial. The impact damaged the railing and parts of the structure.
A large crowd gathered at the site soon after the incident. Alert residents contacted the vehicle owner and informed him about the accident. He assured them that he would repair the damage at his own expense. As a result, no formal complaint has been lodged with the police. The incident caused minor traffic disruption for a short time. However, local residents quickly helped to clear the road, preventing major congestion.
The memorial was beautified by the Sattari Multipurpose Primary Agriculture Credit Society.
Special programmes are held at the site every year on Liberation Day, Republic Day and Independence Day to honour the martyrs. Due to its aesthetic development, the memorial has become an important landmark and a key attraction for residents.
