Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Monday directed the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and other authorities to undertake pre-monsoon works in low lying areas on top priority, to prevent any hardship to people in the area.

Almeida chaired a meeting at the Dy Collector’s office to review pre-monsoon measures in the port town and officials present at the meeting included Mormugao Mamlatdar, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, councillors and WRD officials.

Some MMC councillors put forth their grievances regarding pending pre-monsoon works and other related works.

Directing officials to undertake pre-monsoon works on top priority, Almeida said another meeting would be convened shortly.

“For the past few years, Vasco has had no flooding and this is the reason why I had a review meeting with authorities and directed them to undertake pending pre-monsoon works on top priority.”

“We have low-lying areas like Orulem, Baina, Maimolem and I have asked authorities to stress more on low-lying areas first. Secondly, we will have Saptah

festival soon and gutters have to be cleaned and de-silted immediately. These are the two issues I have taken up with them,” Almeida told reporters.

Former MMC chairperson Deepak Naik said the meeting was convened by Almeida to attend to pre-monsoon works.

“As of now, the work is not up-to-date. The MMC has given works of cleaning gutters on contract and I feel major areas where works were supposed to be taken up have been neglected.”

“The ruling panel is taking up works only in wards of their councillors and this had never happened before.”

“Today, we see students affected in areas of Baina near Mata School and Our Lady of Candelaria school and areas like Voddant police quarters or near HQ hotel are areas where water logging has been witnessed.”

“But these areas have not been touched and instead, works have been taken up in areas like Sada, New Vaddem and Chicalim which are high altitude areas and never witness flooding,” Naik said.

VASCO: Refuting allegations against the council, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said pre-monsoon works were awarded to two contractors who have already begun works in the port town.
“One contractor is working in Wards 1 to 12, while the other contractor has been given Wards 13 to 25. As per reports submitted to me, most of the works are complete,” said Fernandes.
“The contractor operating in Wards 1 to 12 has almost completed his works, except for a few works in Wards 7 and 12.”
“Similarly, the other contractor has almost completed the works, except for two Wards 20 and 22. The works have to be supervised by the ward councillors concerned.”
The chief officer said the MMC would also clear mud outside gutters and would also clear the areas near schools so that students don’t suffer.
