Several students and ex-students of St Andrew institute on Friday morning met the chief officer of Mormugao Municipal Council to protest against frequent issues being raised by various associations over the waiver of construction license fees granted to the school by the civic body.
Students have warned that if anyone tries to rake up issues and attack minority schools then the students, ex-students and parents will come on the streets.
Speaking to the media, ex-student Sherwyn Correia said that the students questioned, “All minority schools have been given a waiver, then why single out on St Andrew’s school? As per a circular waiver of construction license fees have been made applicable for minority non-profit organisations. Some organizations are objecting the waiver granted to the school, so we students were angry and decided to come in large numbers to support MMC.”
He said, “We condemn the move by these organisations to harass the minority institution. Though being a minority institution, St Andrew’s school caters to students of which 80 percent are non-Catholics. We also have students economically weaker sections, but they are never discriminated.”
