MARGAO
The Velim panchayat has on Thursday dashed off a letter to the Directorate of Fisheries to share data with the panchayat body on the fishing vessels registered with the department and the number of migrant workers employed by the boats.
The action by the Velim panchayat comes a day after Margao Deputy Collector, Ganesh Barve had asked the Fisheries Department to share the data relating to manpower engaged by the fishing boats.
Velim Sarpanch Veena Cardozo informed that the panchayat has requested the Fisheries Director to share the data on the fishing vessels operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty and the number of migrant workers employed by these vessels.
“The Cutbona fishing jetty is struck by dengue as well as acute diarrhea amongst the migrant workers, who are employed on the fishing vessels. Sharing the data on the migrant workers will give the panchayat an insight into the number of migrant workers employed at the fishing jetty, and the amenities provided to them including sanitation and hygiene,” she said.
The Velim sarpanch has further informed that the panchayat would write a letter to the Goa State Pollution Control Board to immediately hold a joint inspection at the Cutbona fishing jetty in the wake of dengue and diarrhea outbreak at the jetty.
