The Velsao Panchayat has resolved to petition the Supreme Court
over the double tracking issue after there were heated discussions at the Gram Sabha on Sunday.
The panchayat hall was packed to capacity with the major point of discussion being the double tracking issue especially after the recent dismissal of the petition by the High Court and the panchayat’s next step on the issue.
Speaking to media after the Gram Sabha, Sarpanch Maria Gouveia said that the panchayat had resolved to approach Supreme Court over the double tracking issue.
"I am happy that there was a nice discussion during the Gram Sabha despite several heated arguments regarding doubling of tracks. Though there are a lot of differences, I want our villagers to come on one platform and fight this issue”, she said.
Gouveia also said, “there are two more petitions on double tracking which are pending in courts and after those petitions are decided, the panchayat body has decided to go to Supreme Court”.
Social worker and former Velsao panch Roquezinho D'Souza said that he had raised the issue of the panchayat petition in the HC.
"The recent petition that was filed has been dismissed and we wanted to know if the panchayat was willing to go to SC and the Gram Sabha members wanted to know what would be the cost and how would the funds be arranged”.
He further said, “I have suggested that I will personally speak to a lawyer to find the formalities and the costs and inform the villagers to decide on the future course of action”.
