Former Verna sarpanch Tony D’Costa on Friday expressed his desire to contest the next assembly polls and be one of the new faces of the Congress.

“I would love to be the new face of Congress after Goa Pradesh Congress Commitee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar recently announced that Congress could field around 35 new faces to represent the party for the upcoming assembly elections,” said D’Costa.

D’Costa was speaking to reporters alongside the function after Loren Fernandes was elected unopposed as the new Verna sarpanch after D’Costa stepped down as part of an agreement to share the post of sarpanch equally between D’Costa and Fernandes.

All nine panchas of Verna and panchayat secretary Narayan Azgaonkar were present at the meeting and Nicholos Quadros was the presiding officer for the elections.

“People from in and around Nuvem constituency have already approached me to contest elections as there was never an MLA who was elected from Verna in Nuvem constituency. I have the unconditional support of all panch members of Verna, who have backed my decision to enter mainstream politics.” “I have decided to contest assembly elections from Nuvem constituency if I get a chance. If the Congress offers me the ticket as a new face of the party, I will surely be happy to represent the party from Nuvem constituency.”

“However, I will not support any other party besides the Congress and if the party does not give me the ticket, I will openly support its candidate.”

“Nuvem constituency has always been a Congress constituency and there is no scope for any other party winning here even if it is represented by its tallest leader. If Congress offers me the party ticket, it is an advantage for both because I have already done a lot of development work as sarpanch of Verna,” said D’Costa.
