Goa Forward Party chief, MLA Vijai Sardesai on Thursday called on the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya at New Delhi, to apprise him of the deficient State of Goa’s healthcare infrastructure and has mooted the idea of converting the existing district hospital in South Goa into an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facility.
Sardesai’s meeting with the Union Health Minister comes against the backdrop of his promise to leave no stone unturned to bring superior, and comprehensive medical services to the residents of South Goa and Salcete in particular.
During the meeting, he touched upon the many advantages of having a facility like the AIIMS, including the economic and social impact it will have on the region. “A South Goa-based AIIMS will offer wide ranging, specialised medical services alongside the state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, not only significantly improving healthcare accessibility but also mitigating the need for residents to travel long distances for specialised medical treatments, and procedures, he stated.
Sardesai said, “Like the retention of talented healthcare professionals within the state, and the opportunity to stimulate research, innovation, and the expansion of medical knowledge in the region, opening up avenues for establishing Goa as a Medical Hub. Partnerships with acclaimed national and international institutions would lead to advancements in healthcare practices, medical technology, and improved patient care,” he said.
He added: “The scope for employment for local healthcare professionals, and support staff will increase.”
