Upset on being denied a tarred road to their village for many decades, residents of Maan, a village in Karnataka which lies on the border of Goa, have decided to block the Goa-Belagavi road at Jamboti on October 6 at 11 am.
The road blockade agitation is expected to severely disrupt traffic along the major route, unless authorities resolved their grievances or if locals withdraw their protest.
According to locals of Maan-Karnataka, they have not had a tarred road leading to their village even after 75 years of India’s independence.
They complained that despite constant demands for several years, the mud road has not been repaired or asphalted.
The residents said they are affected the most during the monsoons, when vehicles cannot travel to and from their village due to the muddy road. If a vehicle has to reach the site, it has to be pulled
by residents.
As a result, vehicles stop midway and villagers to walk to and from their village. Students in the village have to walk a distance of 4-5 kms through the jungle to go to the school in Sural Sattari or Kankumbi for high school education.
In a bid to draw the government’s attention to their plight, the locals have now decided to stage a protest by blocking the main Goa-Belavagi road at Jamboti on October 6 at 11 am.
Villagers of Maan have conducted awareness programmes in 10-12 surrounding villages to seek maximum support to their protest.
Residents in the villages of Jamboti, Maan, Kankumbi and other areas are also expected to protest against the dilapidated Goa-Belagavi road via Chorla, which has made it difficult for motorists and commuters to travel along the route.
