Virabhat locals fill up area excavated for mobile tower

MARGAO

With the telecom company and the authorities paying no heed to villagers’ objections to the tower proposed at the government primary school, residents of Virabhat in Curtorim filled up the site excavated by the company to install the mobile tower.

The telecom company had last week tried to resume work on the installation of the mobile tower by deploying a water pump to pump out water from the pit with police protection.

Agitated residents along with Congress leader Moreno Rebello and others, however, had lodged their strong protest against the company trying to bulldoze with the tower project. In fact, the villagers had forced the company to stop work on the project.

Sources in the know informed that since the telecom company in league with other authorities appeared hell-bent on installing the towers against the wishes of the residents, the agitated villagers restored the site to its original condition by filling up the excavated area.

Residents of Virabhat had hit the roads since last month after the telecom company tried to bulldoze with the project when the locals have been demanding the shifting of the tower to an uninhabited place.
