Clashes broke out at the site of the controversial roadwork off Caranzalem beach on Monday morning, as ruling BJP members planted saplings on the site while opposition party workers confronted them and alleged the plantation drive is just a cover-up and a stunt.
Following an uproar over construction of a road off Caranzalem beach, BJP Yuva Morcha workers along with Revenue Minister Jennifer Monserrate and CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate planted coconut saplings at the disputed road area.
A group of Aam Aadmi Party supporters led by Cecille Rodrigues confronted the Monserrattes and BJP workers, alleging that the act of planting trees is just to cover up the controversial act.
However, Jennifer Monserrate said they were unaware who did the roadwork and they were trying to rectify the situation.
"You can't blame an MLA for everything in the constituency. The opposition is just playing politics over a road issue,” said Jennifer.
“While in opposition, it is easy to oppose any project but those who are in the ruling have to ensure that things are delivered to people.”
Meanwhile, AAP workers and some locals alleged that the traditional footpath had been blocked by haphazard plantation.
AAP leader Valmiki Naik sought to know why there was no action on those involved in the roadwork by destroying natural cover.
It may be recalled that on Saturday, people have objected to the construction of a road and had demanded an immediate halt to the work.
