Water supply is expected to be restored in Porvorim constituency within one or two days, once water reaches the water reservoir and the water treatment plant in Porvorim.
Though the Water Resources Department has stated that water has been released from the Tillari Canal, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday said the water had not yet reached the reservoir at Porvorim as yet.
A major breach in the Tillari canal at Kudase-Dodamarg in Maharashtra on January 24 had caused a significant disruption in the supply of raw water to Goa’s water treatment plants, affecting water supply across Bardez taluka.
Residents in Porvorim were forced to rely on water through private tankers, as PWD tankers were insufficient to cater to the demand.
When authorities managed to divert raw water from the Amthane dam and into the Assonora treatment plant, water supply was partially restored to many areas of Porvorim.
However, there was no fixed timing for the release of water and residents of Housing Board Colony began to receive water from 1 am to 2 am and that too, on alternate days. Some areas in Porvorim, especially near the Goa Bagayatdar, are yet to receive normal water supply.
When contacted, Khaunte said he was closely monitoring the overhead water tank near O’Coqueiro to assess the situation and work out ways to improve the water supply to residents.
“There was delay in the release of water from the Amthane Dam to the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, which deepened the water crises in Porvorim. I had directed the PWD to press into service around 12 tankers to supply water to the residents. Now, water supply from the Assonora Water Treatment Plant has resumed and the water scarcity problem has been eased to a great extent."
“Water from Tillari has also been released and once it reaches the water reservoir at Porvorim, the water treatement plant will start functioning and residents will get regular water supply in a day or two,” Khaunte added.
