Wet spell destroyed 35 ha of paddy crop: Agri dept

MARGAO

Around 35 hectares of paddy cultivation have been destroyed in Salcete taluka during the 20-days of wet spell.

The department, however, is compiling the loss caused to the farmers, with  Margao Zonal Agriculture officer Sheriff Furtado making an appeal to the farmers to fill up the forms for compensation.

Furtado told the media that preliminary estimates prepared by the Agriculture department have pegged the total area destroyed under paddy cultivation by the floods around 35 hectares.

“This is the preliminary estimate conducted by the department officials. Our officials have been sent to different villages to assess the destruction and losses. Since the department is facing manpower staff constraint, the officials have been sent to assess the situation constituency wise”, he added.

The ZAO further said that farmers can directly report their losses to the agriculture department by complying with the procedure.

“They can take photos of the fields destroyed by floods and attach a copy of Krishi Card along with their photographs. If they don’t have the Krishi cards, they need not worry, we will work out a mechanism”, he said.
