Who sent gutka consignment to Goa? Cops still in the dark

The seizure of Rs 23 lakh worth gutka at the Margao railway station has thrown up more questions than answers.

Sources in the know said the addresses of three senders of the consignment from Kota-Rajasthan remains unknown. Sources said it was at the instance of the clearing agent that the police could find out the person from Ponda, for whom the consignment was to be delivered.

Questions are being raised by police officials if gutka consignments were being regularly sent to the state from  Rajasthan.

The Konkan railway police, sources said, visited the residence of the person from Ponda, without any success.

A senior police officer informed that the names of the three who had sent the consignment have not mentioned their addresses on the documents.

Konkan railway police SP Sammy Tavares said the police are trying to piece together various aspects of the.

Meanwhile, the clearing agent, who was detained by the police in connection with the seizure, was ordered to be released by the Court after furnishing surety of Rs 15,000.

The agent was directed to report to the Konkan railway police for investigations for five days between 10 am to 1 pm and to report to the investigation officer as and when required.

He has been further told not to leave the state for the next 60 days.

Sources said the police had objected to the release of the clearing agent since he was required in custody to shed light on the names of the other accused persons.

The police is investigating.
