VASCO
Several fish vendors affiliated to the Vasco fish market on Tuesday morning marched to the Mormugao Municipal Council to protest against the presence of wholesalers in and around the Vasco fish market.
Fish vendors later met MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar and put forth their grievances and requested him to take action against fish wholesalers operating outside the market.
“The wholesalers eat up all our business and leave us with no business at all. We get the fish here and also pay MMC all the taxes but we are left with no clients,” complained an aggrieved fish vendor.
These wholesalers who used to cater to bulk business are now doing small and retail business. We request the MMC to take the necessary action and stop people from selling fish outside the market in retail or wholesale,” said the fish vendor.
After listening to their grievances, the MMC Chief Officer assured them of an inspection in the area and later decide on necessary action.
Shankhwalkar also said the MMC had recently acted on people selling fish by the roadside outside the fish market.
“It has to be seen if people operating in stalls outside the market have any approvals or trade licence before the MMC can decide on its next course of action,” said the CO.
