BICHOLIM
Wild cats have continued to cause terror among the tribal community, after 10 cattle were reported to have been killed at Dhangarwada-Sonarbhat in Ladfe-Bicholim.
While it was unclear if a tiger, leopard or any other wild cat had killed the 10 cattle, the alarmed locals have demanded immediate measures by the forest department to ensure the safety and security of the people and their livestock.
According to reports, locals from Sonarbhat-Ladfe were shocked to find 10 cattle killed by a wild cat a few days ago. The cattle owner, Babu Nana Varak from Sonarbhat-Ladfe, filed a complaint with the forest department stating that 10 of his livestock -- eight cows and two calves -- had been killed by a wild cat, causing his a loss of Rs 80,000.
The alarmed locals then covered their huts and cattle sheds with thorny bushes to prevent the entry of wild cats, but that deterrent had little effect as a few days later some goats in a shed were reportedly injured by a wild cat.
Expressing fear that the wild cat could also attack and kill human beings as the cattle killed were residing in sheds adjacent to their homes, Varak warned that the State government should not hold him responsible if the wild cat is attacked by locals angry over the loss of their livestock and constantly fear for their lives.
Besides Varak, others who have also lodged complaints included Santosh Shinde and Sandeep Shinde, who had demanded immediate measures by the forest department to preventive such attacks by wild animals and to provide quick compensation to Varak over the loss of his livestock.
