Woman killed, 4 family members injured in Canacona road mishap

A 49-year-old woman from Varca was killed while four other family members were injured after their car rammed into the divider of Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Highway (Sealink) near Char-Rasta and turned turtle on the Service Road in Canacona on Sunday night.

According to Canacona police, Milagrinha Jennifer Fernandes died of injuries while undergoing treatment at Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) at Chaudi.

The four other injured family members were shifted to Hospicio Hospital, Margao, late Sunday night and three of them, the father and two daughters, were shifted to GMC Bambolim in a serious condition, while the son is out of danger, informed Canacona PSI Ramchandra Naik.

Canacona police said the mishap took place at about 10.30 pm as the five-member family from Varca was returning from Mangalore in a car.

While moving on the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass NH66, the car struck the left side of the divider on reaching Bholyar, which is adjacent to the KRC Station and near Char-Rasta, before jumping on the left side and turning turtle on the Service Road.

The impact was such that the co-driver, Eugenio Rebello (58) and passengers, Neinika Rebello, (21) and Anelley Rebelo (17) suffered grievous injuries, while Milagrinha Jennifer Fernandes, (49) who also suffered serious injuries, succumbed while undergoing treatment at CHC Canacona. The driver, Alison Rebello (25) suffered minor injuries, police said.

Canacona police has registered an offence against the driver for driving in a rash and negligent manner and endangering human life, while proceeding from Mangalore to Varca.

PSI Ramchandra Naik is investigating the case further under the supervision of Canacona PI Pravin Gawas.
