PORVORIM

Construction of the 15 MLD Water Treatment Plant (WTP) has begun behind the Police quarters in Porvorim.

The foundation stone for the Rs 22 crore WTP as well as a Rs 17.7 crore water tank of 25 MLD capacity had been laid by Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on January 4, 2017.

The construction of the first phase of the 25 MLD water tank has been completed. Raw water from Tillari will be tapped at Guirim and some quantity will be diverted to the Porvorim tank through a separate pipeline. A pumping station with four pumps of 300 HP has been constructed near Hotel Green Park at Guirim.

According to the PWD Executive Engineer, work on the 15 MLD water treatment plant began following administrative approval from the government.  The work has been entrusted to Sheth and Sura Engineering Pvt. Ltd from Pune and the project is expected to be completed within one year.

The company’s contractor said a pumping station and two big water tanks, one each to store raw and treated water, will be constructed near the 25 MLD water Reservoir.

“The treated water will then be pumped to seven main Overhead Water tanks in Porvorim constituency for water supply to residents,” said the contractor.

The actual water requirement for Porvorim constituency is about 21 MLD. Presently it receives around 15-16 MLD of water from the Assonora WTP.

To tide over this shortage, Khaunte had put up a proposal before the government to set up a mini WTP of 15 MLD capacity at Porvorim using raw water from Tillari.

Once this plant is commissioned, residents of Porvorim and nearby areas are expected to receive sufficient water supply.
