Work on concrete plant begins at Dhargal despite opposition

PERNEM

Work on a concrete mixing plant at Dhargal which was stopped nearly two months ago following the intervention of Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar, Dhargal Sarpanch Aniket Salgaonkar and others has now resumed, much to the anger of locals in the area.

Construction activity was seen at the site and locals have raised concerns that the project could lead to severe pollution in the area.

Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar and Sarpanch Aniket Salgaonkar had joined hands to stop a concrete mixing project being constructed at Dhargal Industrial Estate as the project was located near human habitat.

“We will not allow the project to be started,” MLA Arlekar had stated, during a site inspection of the project in April and sought to know how the project was permitted so close to human habitat.

“The project has been initiated without taking locals into confidence. The local Panchayat has withdrawn its NOC and henceforth, no polluting project would be permitted at the site,” Arlekar had said.

According to locals, work to set up the concrete mixing project was going on at Dhargal, which is very close to homes. They claimed the project was given permission by administrative officers during the code of conduct, when administrative officers were appointed on the Panchayat.
