The Cuncolim police have booked three persons for criminal negligence in connection with the severe burn injuries sustained by a 21-year-old worker engaged by the contractor to execute underground cabling works in Cuncolim municipal area.
Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao, however, has demanded a detailed probe into the incident, saying electrocution incidents have been on the rise in recent times, insisting that an inquiry will unearth whether the underground cabling works were undertaken by adhering to the safety standards.
Twenty-one-year-old Suraj Kumar Saroj, a native of Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, who was engaged in jointing the underground electric cable sustained grievous burn injuries on his body on Wednesday evening and presently undergoing treatment at GMC Bambolim.
The Cuncolim police have booked offences against the supervisor Subhadwip @ Raj s/o Sujay Paira, for allegedly negligently putting on the electrical switch button, the contractor and the proprietor for having failed to provide the safety equipment/ measures to the injured worker while doing the jointing work of the underground electric cable.
The Cuncolim police have said due to their negligence, the victim Suraj Kumar Saroj sustained grievous burn injuries and is convalescing at the GMC, Bambolim.
A case under Section 125(b) of BNS 2023 stands registered against the accused persons.
Meanwhile, Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who inspected site where the incident took place on Wednesday evening, termed the incident as a serious offence and demanded a thorough inquiry.
He said Power Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar and Chief Electrical Engineer should order an inquiry to find out how and who had charged the line when the worker was jointing the cable and whether the victim was provided safety gear by the contractor. “If there is no inquiry, a wrong signal will go out that the culprits go unpunished. I will also raise the issue in the Legislative Assembly,” he added.
