MARGAO

Termination of a labour contract by the Margao Municipality after the contractors quit the work has left the workers employed by the contractor in the lurch.

Three days after the Civic body terminated the contractor, workers who were earlier employed by the contractor has been sitting around the Municipal building, anxiously hoping that the Municipality will pay the bills of the contractor and will in turn receive their wages.

The manager of the contractor told the media that the Municipality owes the agency around Rs nine lakh, adding that failure to clear the dues has left the workers in a piquant situation “Unless the Civic body clears the bills, we cannot pay the wages of the daily wage workers employed by the agency for door to door collection’, the manager said, while making a fervent plea to the Municipality to clear the dues at the earliest.

The Margao municipality had terminated the contract on the plea that the contractor had stopped supplying labourers to the Civic body to collect door to door waste collection.
