A shocking incident took place in the Mapusa market, where a young man attempted to slit his throat with a knife. The unidentified youth is currently undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College (GMC).

Due to obstruction caused by street vendors, the ambulance faced difficulty in reaching the scene, bringing the issue of market encroachments to the forefront once again.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 6:30 pm. The injured youth, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, entered the alley near Paradise Pharmacy in the market. He picked up a knife from a street vendor sitting by the roadside and, within moments, slashed his own throat. Covered in blood, he collapsed on the ground.

At the time, the market was crowded. Upon witnessing the incident, bystanders rushed to the spot. Soon after, a 108 ambulance and police personnel arrived at the scene.

The incident took place approximately 100 metres from the bus stand. However, street vendors had occupied the market roads, creating obstacles for the ambulance to reach the injured youth.

With police assistance, ambulance staff carried the injured man on a stretcher to the bus stand, from where he was taken to the district hospital. Doctors then referred him to GMC for further treatment, where he is currently being treated.

Encroachments in Mapusa market once again hindered emergency services from reaching the site promptly. This incident has reignited concerns about the persistent issue of market encroachments.

Meanwhile, the reason behind the youth’s suicide attempt remains unclear. Mapusa Police Sub-Inspector Bablo Parab is investigating the matter.
