Exposing what they called are lies of the marina promoters, Prof Ramrao Wagh and the residents said that there was no place for a service road to be put in place near the proposed project as claimed by the promoters
“The existing road is three metres wide and there is no place to widen it further. With a project like marina, imagine the amount of traffic flow that the area will experience,” Wagh said. He added that the parking and barricades would create a mess in the area.
“The existing road is even smaller than a service road. Where is the question of the promoters coming up with a service road for the villagers?” he questioned.
Wagh rubbished the claim of the promoters helping locals with “alternative means of earning.” When the promoters are saying fishing will not be affected, then where is the question of alternative means of earning? he asked.
He pointed out that the promoters said that educated youth will be accommodated in the marina. “What about those who are not educated?” he demanded to know. The Goa University professor also pointed out that the promoters had given no numbers as to how many youth would be employed and that all promises were like building castles in the air.
As far as the environment is concerned, Wagh said that in the EIA, the flora and fauna of the area have not been listed.
“The windowpane oysters which are almost extinct according to reports by the ICAR and NIO have not been mentioned in the EIA,” he said.
He asked what would happen if the marina runs into a loss after it is constructed. “The environment will already have been destroyed. Once destroyed, it cannot be restored,” he said.
