A group of youth of Mapusa on Wednesday urged the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) to carry out registration of vendors to prevent proliferation of migrants in the municipal market.
The Mapusa youth in a memorandum to MMC Chief Officer Clen Madeira said only those members who are Goans and registered with the municipal council should be allowed to sell goods in the market.
“People who buy goods from registered vendors will feel secure as they could always come back and question the concerned vendor over the quality of goods or service rendered,” said Gaurish Keni, one of the youth.
The Mapusa youth also said preference should be given to the youth and citizens of Mapusa to do business in the municipal market.
“Lack of opportunities and unemployment situation has driven our youth to the wrong path. Most of the youth do not get a chance to do business either in the Mapusa market or other areas in the jurisdiction of the municipality,” said Pravin Asolkar.
He said the council should take the initiative to provide opportunities to the youth to be on their own feet.
The youth said non-Goans had captured the entire market even as MMC had no records of such people who were doing business and demanded appropriate steps to sort out issues of vendors in the market. The famous Mapusa market was recently in the news as allegations of migrants stepping over the business of locals flew fast.
Recently, Revolutionary Goans under the leadership of Manoj Parab virtually threatened migrants doing business in the flower market at the expense of the locals.
