14 held in raid at sand extraction site, sand worth Rs 2 crore seized

PANAJI

The coastal security police arrested 14 persons for alleged illegal sand extraction and its transportation, in an early morning raid on Saturday.

The raiding team seized eight trucks carrying sand, which is valued at Rs 1.10 crore besides four canoes that carried sand worth Rs 60 lakh and sand stack/dumps valued at Rs 30 lakh; all from the crime spot located below the Banastarim bridge.

A First Information Report under section 379 (theft) IPC and Section 21 Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act has been registered. 

“The accused were caught red-handed and hence arrested. Our team also seized all the items,” an officer said.
