PORVORIM
The water treatment plant at Porvorim was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the presence of former Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on January 5 but 15 days on, water is yet to be released to residents.
At present, there is acute water shortage in Porvorim and several residents receive water for only an hour every day. Some areas in Socorro, Salai and Britona do not even receive water every day.
Many residential colonies in Porvorim constituency have been hiring private tankers to meet their requirements by paying hefty charges.
The PWD had assured to release 5 MLD of treated water every day through this plant and Khaunte had been putting pressure on the PWD to release water as early as possible.
Residents were also hoping that the PWD would provide water for at least 2 hours every day.
When contacted, PWD Chief Engineer Santosh Mhapne said water from the Tillari Dam had been sent to the water treatment plant at Porvorim on January 5.
“This water had high pH value and was unfit for human consumption. Hence, it was not treated at the Porvorim water treatment plant. Water has been received and is being treated. If found fit for human consumption, the plant will be commissioned next week,” said Mhapne.
“Once this plant is commissioned, residents of Porvorim will get sufficient water even if water is not pumped from the Assnora reservoir. Initially, 5 MLD will be released and gradually, 15 MLD water will be treated and released to residents of Porvorim.”
Mhapne informed that a contractor had damaged the water pipeline near Pundalik Nagar last week and hence, there was no water supply for some time.
