Goa continues to grapple with a worrying road safety situation, with 2,176 accidents reported across the State between January 1, 2022 and January 31, 2026. A significant number of road accident deaths during this period occurred in self-accidents, with 396 people losing their lives in crashes where no other vehicle was involved.
Replying to a starred question tabled by MLA Aleixo Lourenco, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant presented the data in the Legislative Assembly, indicating that road accidents have remained consistently high over the past four years.
As per the figures tabled in the House, 548 accidents were recorded in 2022, followed by 539 in 2023, 518 in 2024, and 528 in 2025. In 2026, a further 43 accidents were reported till January 31.
The data also underlined the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders, who account for the largest share of fatalities on Goan roads. A total of 657 bikers have lost their lives in road accidents since 2022.
The year-wise figures show that 167 bikers died in 2022, 152 in 2023, 171 in 2024, and 158 in 2025. In January 2026 alone, nine bikers have already died, indicating that two-wheeler riders remain among the most exposed road users in the State. Between 2022 and January 2026, 396 people died in self-accidents, while 352 deaths were reported in crashes involving multiple vehicles.
The Chief Minister also informed the House that several “black spots” and accident-prone zones have been identified across Goa where accidents occur frequently. As of 2024, the State has identified 43 critical accident locations, including 13 accident-prone zones and 30 black spots.
In North Goa, 22 locations have been identified, including traffic stretches such as the KTC Bus Stand junction in Panaji, the Sai Baba Temple area on the Kadamba Bypass, and the Porvorim stretch near O’Coqueiro. In South Goa, 21 locations have been marked as high-risk areas, including the Arlem-Nuvem bypass, the Cuncolim Bus Stand junction, and the Dabolim Airport junction.
