Around 5 per cent of the total stock of onions received from Nasik-based National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) has been returned to the marketing agency by the Goa state government, informed Civil Supplies Minister Govind Gaude.
"Till date around 50 metric tonnes of onion has been returned to NAFED. We have told this agency to give us replacement or give back the money," said Minister Gaude.
It may be recalled that the Goa government had ordered 1,045 metric tonnes of onion from NAFED.
Gaude said that civil supply inspectors are checking the quality of the onions in the trucks and if any poor quality consignment is found, the truck is sent back immediately.
Gaude urged fair price shop owners not to distribute rotten onions to customers but rather get it exchanged from the civil supplies department.
The Minister also said if people are not satisfied with the scheme, the same would be shut. The government started the scheme to give relief to the people after the rates of onions shot up in the open market.
There are around 3.5 lakh ration cardholders in the state getting onions at Rs 34 per kg. There were complaints from the people that onions supplied through the ration system are poor in quality.
