Asscn offers to pay PDA Rs 25 L monthly as sopo if maintenance handed to them

MARGAO

The Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association has offered to pay to the SGPDA Rs 25 lakh per month by way of sopo collection fees if the wholesale fish market is handed over to the Association for maintenance.

Alleging discrepancies and revenue leakages in the sopo collection, Ibrahim said if the SGPDA is presently earning Rs 17 lakh by way of sopo fee collection, the wholesale fish market Association is ready to pay Rs 25 lakh per month to the PDA. “Other than the 30-40 Goan traditional fishermen, we will ensure that migrant vendors are not allowed to conduct retail fish sale in the wholesale fish market. We will also take care of the maintenance of the market, including the cleanliness and hygiene”, he said.

Saying that the SGPDA has failed to appoint a sopo contractor through a tendering process, Ibrahim said the absence of a tender and a notified contractor has resulted in the leakage of revenue and rampant illegalities in the wholesale fish market.
