PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today assured the House that the government has taken cognisance of the acute shortage of buffalo meat (beef) in the State and is actively working to restore supply at the earliest.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Venzy Viegas, who highlighted the distress faced by communities that rely on beef as a staple part of their diet. He said the shortage was impacting not only cultural and social practices but also the economic livelihood of those dependent on the beef trade.
“This is a serious concern. The acute shortage is reportedly due to multiple factors, including disruptions in the supply chain, restrictions on cattle transport, and inconsistent regulatory enforcement,” Viegas stated.
He urged the government to investigate the root causes by engaging with all stakeholders, traders, transporters, and supply chain managers, and to implement a sustainable solution.
Sawant attributed the shortage to an ongoing strike in Karnataka, a key supplier of beef to Goa. “We have taken cognisance of the beef shortage in the State. The supply is affected due to the ongoing strike in Karnataka; however, we are trying to resume the supply at the earliest,” the Chief Minister told the House.
