CANACONA
A bull was rescued by fire and emergency services personnel after getting stuck on the first floor of a residential quarter of the Canacona Post office building in Chaudi Canacona
The bull was found stranded on the narrow landing of the residential quarter of the postmaster situated on the first floor of the building which houses the Canacona post office.
Incidentally, the residential quarter meant for occupation of the postmaster is unoccupied and the flat is closed permanently.
The bull apparently moved up through the narrow stairs, but could not come down, and it was initially not known for how long the bull had been stuck there.
However, the postal staff and customers in the post office below were confronted with a strong odour of dung and urine for about 3-4 days.
After searching around the compound and inside the building for any dung and urine, a postal office staff member casually went upstairs and was startled to notice a bull and realised it had been stranded on the landing of the building.
The Canacona fire station was notified and when a fire and emergency services team went up the stairs, the bull became aggressive. Efforts were then made to force the bull down the staircase by bursting firecrackers, but it was apparently visibly weak from starvation and did not respond to the sound of firecrackers.
FES personnel then noticed the bull could not manoeuvre through the narrow and curved/tilted staircase to come down.
Finally, the firefighters managed to tie a rope to the bull's horn and pull it down the stairs with great effort.
Incidentally, no owner came forward to claim ownership of the bull, as the animal was left in the open to roam and look for food on its own.
