Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has raised urgent concerns about the increasing number of tree falls during the monsoon season, calling on the government to take immediate and proactive measures to ensure public safety.
Speaking during the Zero Hour, Lobo emphasized the growing danger posed by falling trees and branches. Lobo highlighted that the frequent tree falls are causing significant anxiety among residents and commuters.
"People are scared to leave their homes and travel on the roads because of the risk posed by falling trees and branches, which have already claimed lives," Lobo said.
He pointed out that the recent torrential rains have increased the number of tree falls in the State, further heightening fears among the public. The MLA urged the government, particularly Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, to instruct the administration to take swift action in cutting down dangerous trees and branches.
He criticized the lack of interest and action towards addressing the issue, attributing part of the problem to legal challenges from tree owners. "Nobody seems to be interested in taking action against dangerous trees. Some property owners block these initiatives by approaching the courts. I have been a victim of this myself," Lobo added.
The urgency of the matter was underscored by a tragic incident on Sunday, where 19-year-old Arti Gond was killed when a tree fell on her near the municipal garden in Panaji.
In response to Lobo’s concerns, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant acknowledged the gravity of the situation. "Sunday’s incident was an eye-opener about the potential harm that dangerous trees can cause," Sawant said.
He outlined a plan for addressing the issue, stating that local representatives need to report dangerous trees to the Deputy Collector. Following an inspection, the Deputy Collector, in coordination with the fire brigade, will ensure that these trees are cut down to prevent further incidents.
