Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has voiced strong criticism against the traffic police, accusing them of prioritising the issuance of fines over implementing measures to reduce road accidents.
While speaking his mind about rising cases of road accidents, Lobo suggested that the government's focus on achieving fine issuance targets is misplaced and ineffective in addressing the root causes of road accidents.
"Instead of taking strict measures to stop accidents, the focus is to complete targets of issuing challans. This is not acceptable. Achieving targets will not reduce accidents," Lobo stated.
He announced his intention to write to the Chief Minister and raise the issue in the assembly, advocating for a shift in priorities towards more impactful road safety measures.
Lobo highlighted the need for practical steps to mitigate accident-prone zones, such as painting speed breakers and erecting clear signages across the State. He noted that the Assistant Director of Transport had previously written to panchayats, urging them to take proactive steps in enhancing road safety by using their funds to install necessary infrastructure like speed breakers and sign boards.
However, he observed that while a few panchayats have been diligent in implementing these measures, the majority have not. "The panchayats can use their funds to paint speed breakers, erect sign boards, etc. A few panchayats have been doing it, but the majority of them are not implementing it," Lobo remarked.
He called on panchayat members to identify accident-prone zones and collaborate with the Public Works Department (PWD) to rectify these hazardous areas. "The panchayat members should identify accident-prone zones and write to the PWD to get the work done to correct the situation," he added.
Lobo also pointed out the frequent blame-shifting among departments when road safety issues arise. "Many times, the departments blame each other when things go wrong," he noted, underscoring the need for better coordination and accountability among various governmental bodies involved in road safety.
The MLA's comments come amid growing concerns over the rising number of road accidents in Goa.
