The Calangute panchayat has commenced the second phase of its drive to clear illegal roadside encroachments, continuing its action against structures obstructing road-widening works in the beach village.
As part of the latest phase, notices were issued to encroaching structures. Panchayat officials said most owners voluntarily dismantled their extensions after receiving the notices, while the panchayat carried out demolition of the remaining four to five structures that failed to comply.
The clearance work is expected to continue in the coming days.
This phase follows the panchayat’s earlier action two months ago, when it initiated demolitions of illegal commercial structures encroaching on land earmarked for road expansion, acting on directions of the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
A prior survey had identified at least 23 structures encroaching onto public land designated for widening the busy stretch in Gauravaddo.
After completing due process, the panchayat issued demolition orders to all proprietors before initiating action.
The ongoing crackdown stems from the High Court’s order directing the State government to undertake phased action against illegal constructions, prioritising roadside encroachments that impede public infrastructure projects.
Following the court directive, both the Directorate of Panchayats and the Directorate of Municipal Administration instructed local bodies to enforce the removal of illegal structures within their jurisdictions.
Panchayat officials affirmed that the demolition drive will continue until all identified encroachments are cleared.
