Cardinal calls for peace, unity, and protection of constitutional values in New Year message

PANAJI: Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, has extended New Year greetings to readers, especially in Goa, praying for the Almighty’s blessings, peace in families, harmony in communities, and unity in the State and the nation as 2026 begins.

In his New Year message, the Cardinal expressed deep anguish over what he said was a growing sense of insecurity among minority communities. He referred to attacks on Christians during recent Christmas celebrations in several parts of the country, describing them as painful and contrary to India’s tradition of peaceful coexistence and respect for diverse cultures and religions.

The Cardinal said such incidents hurt Christian communities and undermine the moral fabric and sacred values the nation has always stood for. He noted that the Constitution guarantees the free and fair practice of religion, yet some communities continue to face persecution for celebrating their important festivals, often with the tacit approval of authorities.

Appealing to the authorities at all levels, Cardinal Ferrão urged them to uphold their constitutional responsibility and act decisively and impartially against the perpetrators, to restore public confidence in democratic values.

He also called upon citizens who stand for harmony, justice, and mutual respect to join hands against divisive forces and uphold the unity of the nation.
