As part of the International Coastal Clean-up Day, the Coast Guard ships based at Goa in association with the Coast Guard and civil volunteers conducted a cleanliness drive at Bagmalo beach.
The International Coastal Clean-up Day is conducted in the third week of September every year under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) in the South Asian Region. The Indian Coast Guard has been coordinating this activity in India since 2006.
The emphasis of the endeavour this year was to removal the inorganic/plastic debris from beaches and spread awareness among the public to preserve the pristine beaches.
The cleanliness drive at Bogmalo Beach witnessed active participation of approximate 140 volunteers.
During the event, CG volunteers collected inorganic trash and also sensitised beach-goers through display of placards about the need and essence for preservation of marine life and sea.
The campaign resulted in the collection of about 30 bags of the trash and non-degradable marine litter from the beach.
The Coast Guard ships ‘ICGS Sachet’, ‘ICGS Sujeet’, ‘ICGS Sagar’, ‘ICGS Apoorva’, ‘ICGS Amal’, ‘C-158’, ‘C-148’ along with central and state government organisations like CISF and Goa Shipyard Limited also activity participated in the drive.
