The agitation against the proposed Unity Mall and Prashasan Stambh projects in Chimbel nearly spiraled out of control on Tuesday, as angry villagers clashed with panchayat member Shankar Naik, prompting police intervention.
The protest, which has been simmering for weeks, erupted when a group of villagers stormed the Chimbel Panchayat office demanding answers from the sarpanch. While the sarpanch assured them of standing with local interests, the crowd turned its ire on Panch Shankar Naik, who has publicly supported the Unity Mall.
Naik had recently circulated a video endorsing the project, which villagers alleged hurt local sentiments and stoked a “local versus migrant” divide. As tensions mounted, protesters demanded his removal from the office. When police attempted to escort Naik out, the crowd surrounded him, pushing and shouting slogans.
A human chain of police officers was quickly formed to shield Naik, who was safely removed under protection. However, the situation escalated further when male police personnel attempted to move female protesters in the absence of women officers, sparking fresh anger and a brief scuffle.
The incident underscored the growing hostility toward the government-backed projects which the protesters argue are located close to Toyyar lake threatens the environment and local identity.
The issue echoed in the Goa Legislative Assembly, where Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte defended the initiative, stating: “Unity Mall is not just a commercial building. It is a golden opportunity to showcase Goa’s traditional craftsmanship to the world."
Khaunte sought to argue that all environmental norms will be adhered to.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant also weighed in, urging dialogue over confrontation. “We respect the concerns of the people. I invite the protesting villagers for talks so that we can resolve this issue amicably,” he said.
Despite these assurances, Tuesday's near-violent clash has raised fears that the controversy could escalate further if consensus is not reached soon.
