Despite the cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea, conditions have become favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from Goa as well as the rest of the country.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi had forecast the withdrawal of monsoon from the southern peninsula and hence from the entire country from October 1. The withdrawal line of southwest monsoon in the State has been stationary for almost five days since October 9.
“Although the monsoon has already started retreating, we received some rain in the last two days basically because of the cyclonic circulation in the Karnataka region,” said Ramesh Kumar, a meteorologist.
In keeping with the trend of receiving isolated showers post-monsoon continued with several parts of the State receiving light rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The Sanquelim station received maximum rainfall (168.8 mm) for the period from October 1 till Saturday morning followed by Sanguem, which received 164.6 mm. The Dabolim station has received minimum rainfall for the same period at an amount of 59.2 mm.
“The conditions for the monsoon withdrawal from an area or region is experience of dry weather over the area for five days, the establishment of anticyclonic circulation in the lower troposphere and considerable reduction in the moisture content,” Kumar said.
IMD Panaji has predicted rain/thundershowers in many places for the next three days. On Saturday, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 33.1 degrees Celsius, nearly 1 degree above normal and a minimum temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal. The sky is likely to continue to remain cloudy with light haze in the morning, the IMD said.
