A long-standing garbage black spot at Baina was finally cleared on Tuesday by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) councillor Shraddha Amonkar, much to the relief of local residents who had been living with the nuisance for over a decade.
The initiative not only removed the heap of waste that had turned into an eyesore but also marked the beginning of a beautification project aimed at discouraging people from dumping garbage in the area.
Speaking at the site, Amonkar recalled how the problem had spiralled out of control.
“What started as a small spot for people to discard waste gradually turned into a massive dumping ground. Residents from Vasco and Mormugao would drive here and fling their garbage, creating a filthy heap that was unbearable,” she said.
She explained that an earlier attempt to control the issue by installing a garbage cage and bins had backfired.
“Instead of helping, it attracted more waste. The area became a mess, infested with stray dogs and cattle, posing health risks and even danger to motorists at night. People could not tolerate the stench, and sickness spread in the neighbourhood,” Amonkar said.
Using funds from the 15th Finance Commission, the councillor said she decided to clear the spot, remove the cages, and shift garbage collection facilities away from the location.
Going forward, the site will be given a complete facelift.
“We will lay pavers, install benches, and give the place an aesthetic makeover. CCTV cameras will also be fitted to track violators. Anyone found dumping garbage here will face fines and even police cases,” she warned.
Amonkar also appealed to residents to cooperate and refrain from creating new blackspots.
“This is not just about clearing garbage but about changing mindsets. I request citizens to join hands in keeping our city clean,” she added.
