In a new twist to the horrific assault on the tourists in a hotel in Anjuna, reports are now emerging that the tourists were also at fault as they behaved irresponsibly and also misbehaved with the hotel staff, which triggered the dastardly attack.
Sources in the hotel and the local youth told The Goan that the Delhi-based tourists who checked into the hotel on March 5 began to drink alcohol near the swimming pool.
The concerned hotel staff requested the guests not to indulge in the activity as the hotel rules did not permit guests to drink near the pool.
The tourists ignored the advice and continued with their bingeing activity and later also started smoking near the pool.
For the second time, the staffer requested the guests not to drink and smoke as it was disallowed.
The tourists, who were already in a holiday mood, got upset with the restrictions and abused the hotel staffer.
“One of them also hit the staffer who was just doing his job,” a hotel employee informed.
The tourists also complained against the staffer who was then asked to leave the hotel premises by the hotel manager.
The staffer, who is known to be diligent in his work, narrated the tale to his friends. A group of his friends and locals later gathered outside the hotel.
One of the tourists then began to shoot video of the youth who had assembled outside the hotel gate, which enraged the group of youth who got into a verbal dual with the tourist.
The tourist was then joined by his kin and the victim, Anil Kumar Sharma, who were then badly assaulted by the locals with an iron rod and knife.
“We do not condone the act of the locals who attacked the tourists. It is completely wrong. But it was the tourists who instigated the fight. First, they behaved irresponsibly and abused the staff and later unnecessarily began to video film the youth,” a member of the Anjuna panchayat said on the condition of anonymity.
