As the world’s eyes turn to Goa for the highly anticipated exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier starting this Thursday, Nov 21, the four-century-old silver casket containing the saint’s relics will be guarded like a high-value asset.
To ensure its safety and that of the countless pilgrims expected to visit, Goa Police has devised measures deploying a multi-layered security system. Director General of Police Alok Kumar told The Goan that dedicated police teams would be stationed near the casket, and drones would soar overhead to monitor the crowds and any suspicious activity.
“We have undertaken watertight security arrangements throughout the exposition. The casket will receive VVIP-level protection with dedicated police teams stationed in close proximity. Round-the-clock PCR patrols will strengthen security in and around Old Goa. We have also set up watchtowers and a comprehensive network of CCTV cameras to monitor and record all movements of each visitor,” he revealed, discussing comprehensive security arrangements for the decennial exposition.
On additional measures, he revealed that drones will provide aerial crowd surveillance. “We will deploy a drone on days when larger footfalls are anticipated, especially on religious occasions. Depending on the crowd size, more than one drone will be utilized,” Kumar added.
Acknowledging the menaces of petty crimes like pickpocketing or theft during such large-scale events, the DGP assured robust countermeasures.
“We have compiled a list of offenders in Goa and have intensified surveillance on them. Moreover, security has been heightened at key locations including the event venues, railway stations and bus stands, among other public places to ensure public safety,” he said.
As many as 1500-2000 armed police personnel will be deployed all through the event.
As the security apparatus is geared up for a safe and peaceful exposition, the police have also appealed for public cooperation wherein visitors are urged to be vigilant, report any suspicious activity and adhere to the guidelines issued during the event. “We will ensure not only a spiritual experience but also a safe one for which cooperation from the general public and stakeholders is needed,” another officer revealed.
Temporary traffic outpost exclusively for Exposition
A Temporary Traffic Outpost/Control Room at Old Goa will be set up to coordinate traffic operations. For this, the department has appointed Ponda Traffic Police Inspector Krishna Sinari as the In-Charge, who will be assisted by a PSI and ASI, and eight Head Constables and Police Constables working in round-the-clock shifts.
“This staff will work in shifts, round the clock and coordinate with the Exposition Secretariat and Church authorities to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic and availability of adequate traffic furniture. Presently, PI TC Ponda Krishna Sinari along with staff are detailed at Old Goa to ensure that all the Traffic related amenities are properly taken care of including the development of parking lots,” the traffic department said, in reply to The Goan’s query.
The deployment has been divided into two parts -- Heavy Days and Normal Days within and in close vicinity of the Basilica of Bom Jesus. For Heavy Days, a total of 699 traffic police personnel will man the traffic while 455 personnel will be for Normal Days.
To further streamline vehicular movement, the Traffic police created designated entry and exits. Information shared with The Goan reveals the roads along the Bom Jesus of Basilica and Se Cathedral are converted into a one-way ring road viz. Old Goa Church Junction “ St. Catherine Chapel “ Arch of Conception “ Petrol Pump “ Old Goa PS “ the residence of Ex MLA Pandurang Madkaikar “ Old Goa Church Junction.
Similarly, the stretch of road from Pilar Junction to Neura Junction has also been converted into one-way. On this stretch of road, vehicles will be allowed to proceed from Pilar to Neura only. All these vehicles during their return journey will proceed via NH 748 with diversions and parking for vehicles entering from different parts of Goa also finalised.
