MARGAO
The signal system at Margao Railway Station was down for a couple of hours early Thursday morning, forcing Konkan Railway employees to operate the signals manually.
The incident is believed to have occurred early Thursday morning when a fire at the Margao railway yard damaged the junction box and cables.
Confirming the incident, KRC senior railway official Baban Ghatge informed that someone had set fire near the junction box at the Margao railway yard, causing the box and cables of the signalling system to burn. He said the cables were replaced by the KRC staff, and it took nearly 2-3 hours to complete the work. “During the intervening period, the KRC staff had to operate the signals manually,” Ghatge said.
To a question, he said the KRC would lodge a complaint with the Konkan Railway Police to investigate the incident. Sources, however, suggest that some labourers may have set the fire in the early hours of the day due to the cold conditions, before the fire spread towards the junction box.
