Fishermen want beach cleaning to be mindful of fishing activity

The Old Cross Canoe Owners Society President Custodio D’Souza has welcomed the government’s intervention to revive Kharewaddo beach, but said beach cleaning activity must sensitive to ongoing fishing activity.

“The demand for beach cleaning has been pending for years. Now, with the tourism minister’s visit, we feel hopeful. But our fishing operations are at their peak, especially for solar shrimp. The use of heavy machinery or JCBs can disrupt our daily business. We request the government to time the works appropriately,” D’Souza said.

He also appealed for additional facilities at Kharewaddo beach.

“We want to see illumination, lifeguards, and scientific methods to restore the beach that has been eroded due to dredging by the Mormugao Port. As an association, we are ready to take responsibility. Once the beach is cleaned, we can warn violators or even impose fines to keep the beach clean,” he added.
