Atal Setu, the cable-stayed bridge across the River Mandovi was back in the news after nearly an hour’s rain inundated almost 100 metre stretch of the bridge on Friday evening.
A video that has gone viral on social media platforms showed motorists slowing down and negotiating through the flooded stretch on the bridge.
A senior engineer with the National Highways informed that one of the drains on the bridge was choked and that led to the flooding. He said as soon as the channel was cleared the water drained off.
The Congress, the principal Opposition party, however, pounced on the video to hit back at the BJP-led government calling it a reflection of BJP’s corruption in infra development.
“Monument of corruption Atal Sethu shows its josh once again. This bridge will keep haunting @BJP4India & @BJP4Goa for years to come,” said Amarnath Panjikar, Congress leader in a tweet.
“This bridge is the reflection on the corrupt regime of Double Engine BJP government,” he added, tagging PM Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, CM Pramod Sawant and BJP President J P Nadda.
Not long ago, Atal Sethu was embroiled in a controversy due to numerous potholes emerging on the bridge from the time it was commissioned in 2019.
Later, the State government had engaged IIT-Madras to examine and prepare a report in the matter.
