Goa uses AI to screen residents for lung cancer

Goa's programme which uses AI (artificial intelligence) to screen its population for lung cancer was showcased at the 78th World Health Assembly, at Geneva where Goa's health official, who presented how the programme works.

Dr Kedar Raikar of the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) led the team at the prestigious Assembly. 

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane who posted about the development on his handle on the micro-blogging site 'X' (formerly Twitter) said Goa is the first State in India to implement this AI-powered lung cancer screening programme across the State in collaboration with AstraZeneca and Qure.ai.

The screening has thus far been conducted at 19 public health facilities where early-stage lung cancer is being detected through routine X-rays. 

The qXR AI system assists in identifying abnormalities and supports the work of radiologists. 

Rane said, 56,752 scans have been completed under the programme, identifying 5,498 nodules and 388 high LNMs across the 19 centres.

"This proactive strategy of early detection significantly improves individual survival rates," he added.
