The Deputy Superintendent of Police, accused of sexually harassing two interns from Goa University (GU), is expected to face a separate inquiry led by a senior IPS officer, likely Deputy Inspector General of Police Aslam Khan.
The development comes after GU’s internal inquiry committee submitted a conciliation report to the Director General of Police Jaspal Singh, which also included the statement of the implicated officer.
As per reliable sources, the officer has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged offense while the students maintained that there was no physical harassment but the officer made objectionable verbal comments.
“The officer previously evaded the inquiry by not attending, which hindered the completion of the report. Now that he has responded, our committee has fulfilled its obligations. The officer refuted allegations and refused to apologize,” a source from the varsity disclosed.
“It is now up to the officer’s parent department to take appropriate action, given that the incident took place on the police premises and involved a non-GU member.”
Sources indicated that since the incident did not occur within the GU campus and did not involve any of its staff or students, the Vishaka committee lacked jurisdiction to conduct an inquiry.
“However, as part of the established procedure, a preliminary report was compiled, incorporating statements from both parties involved,” he added.
The committee reportedly acknowledged that the officer had not made any physical advances or physically harassed the interns. Instead, they suggested that he should still issue an apology and ensure that such behaviour would not recur to which the officer refused.
