Guv Pillai slams Kerala legislative assembly for rejecting UCC

PANAJI

Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai criticized the Kerala Legislative Assembly for their unanimous resolution against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

While addressing a special session of the Goa Legislative Assembly attended by President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, Governor Pillai, did not explicitly mention the Assembly by just referring to it as ‘one’ Legislative Assembly.

“I am not mentioning the name. If I mention it, the shame will come to me also. I am from that State,” Pillai, originally from Kerala, said.

Pointing out that President Murmu, during her address on Tuesday, commended Goa for adopting the UCC, he further expressed concern about the prevailing situation in certain states where property distribution is biased against women. He questioned the lack of gender justice in such scenarios, highlighting the unconstitutional discrimination based on gender.

“There is gender justice (in Goa). This is the only State in India where the son and daughter are entitled to equal rights in their family property. In other states, I am not mentioning any state, the daughter is entitled to one-third of the property whereas two third goes to the male of the house. Where is gender justice,” he questioned.

Governor Pillai also highlighted that expressing opinions about provisions in the constitution, including Article 44 which pertains to the Code, is a right that everyone possesses. He reiterated the validity of the Kerala Assembly passing a unanimous resolution to reject the implementation of the UCC.

“...Onslaught on executive, judiciary and legislature...One can express the opinion. Everyone has the right to express their opinion and I am not against that, but an assembly passed a resolution not to implement it. Such an extent our assembly is going exceptionally...” he remarked.
