HC directs State to submit details of staff at police stations

PANAJI

The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the State to submit details of staff posted at police stations as it took suo motu cognisance of a news report pointing  alleged administrative mismanagement in the Goa police.

The Division Bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Nivedita Mehta has also appointed former Advocate General Subodh Kantak as the Amicus curiae to draft a proper Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to examine the issues.

The news report mentioned about staff shortage at 90 per cent police stations. "Considering the issue of great importance, suo motu cognizance is taken of staff in police stations in Goa as we agreed, with the reporting that this would have a direct impact upon the progress of the investigation of various crimes registered at the police stations," the Court said adding, "It is a known fact that the police officers are also required to be deployed for certain other events which involve public festivities like Ganesh Chaturthi apart from the police bandobast which is required for VIPs and this definitely leave very few police officers in the police stations to carry out actual investigation, which not only delay the investigation but also affect the quality of investigation."

The Bench and asked the State authorities to place facts and data before it while adjourning the matter for hearing on August 7.
