The Indian Super League (ISL), inaugurated in October 2014, has emerged as a significant football tournament in India, uniting fans from across the nation.
With approximately 22 teams currently competing in the league, Goa has been an active participant since its inception, with FC Goa being one of the founding members.
The ISL has not only brought football enthusiasts together but has also provided a platform to showcase immense talent, especially from States like Goa. Football in Goa transcends being just a sport; it's a passion embraced by people of all ages, from youngsters to grassroots players.
Over the past decade, the ISL has played a pivotal role in elevating Indian football, particularly in Goa. Goan footballers have made significant strides, garnering recognition both domestically and internationally. More than 60 to 70 players from Goa have graced the ISL, kickstarting their careers with teams like FC Goa and occasionally moving on to other franchises.
These talented individuals have not only excelled in the ISL but have also left their mark in prestigious tournaments such as the AFC, ACL, SAFF Championships, and other international events. Many Goan players have represented the national team, showcasing their skills on the international stage.
Since the inception of the ISL, over 60 Goan players have been registered with various franchise teams, with nearly 50 of them actively participating in the league. Currently, around 35 to 40 Goan players are part of different franchise teams, including FC Goa.
The ISL has not only provided a platform for players to showcase their talent but has also facilitated their growth and development. Some former players who graced the ISL have transitioned into coaching and other technical roles, contributing to the further development of football in the region.
Some of the prominent Goan players who currently ply their trade in the ISL include Brandon Fernandes (FC Goa), Liston Colaco (Mohun Bagan Super Giant), Lenny Rodrigues - Odisha FC, Seriton Fernandes (FC Goa), Glan Martins (Mohun Bagan Super Giant) and Princeton Rebello (Odisha FC), besides others. Also, there is a long list of Goan players who have played in the ISL in the past. The ISL has not only elevated the stature of Indian football but has also served as a platform for Goan players to showcase their talent and make significant contributions to the sport.
