People walking in and out is daily fare and whatever the number or frequency of visitors it is unlikely to unruffle personnel there. However, when this buffalo appeared at the Panaji police station on Saturday, everyone present took notice.
Farmers from Taleigao, fed up with their crops being damaged by this rogue buffalo and the police doing nothing with their repeated complaints decided to take this drastic action.
They captured the buffalo which has one of its ears tagged, and headed to the police station with the animal in tow. They demanded that she (buffalo) and its owner be taken to task.
According to Nathan D'Souza, a young Taleigao farmer, the she-buffalo has been damaging fields with crops standing in their locality for the last several days.
"Apart from eating the standing crop, she also damaged the drip irrigation pipe network in the field," D'Souza said.
"This has caused us a loss of around Rs 6 lakhs. We had lodged a complaint with the Panaji police about this but nothing has been done," the young farmer said.
"We caught the buffalo on Friday night and realised it has a tag in one of its ears which means it has an owner. The police should trace the owner from the tag and take action so that we are compensated," he added.
