Furious residents of Xettia-vaddo, Mapusa, have raised strong objections against a garage-turned-shop located on the front side of the Goa Football Association (GFA) stadium, alleging that it has become a regular hub for illegal drinking and a constant source of nuisance.
What was once a simple shop has now morphed into a full-fledged drinking adda, according to locals.
Almost every afternoon and late into the nights, men gather here to consume alcohol openly, yelling, screaming and disturbing the neighbourhood with no regard for law or order.
“The shop has been converted into an unauthorized bar by day and night. People who patronize it indulge in yelling and screaming until the early hours, making it intolerable for us residents to get any sleep,” complained local resident S Soares.
Residents also highlighted the issue of haphazard parking by the visitors.
“Their vehicles are parked in a disorderly manner, often blocking the road and causing inconvenience to others. On top of that, empty bottles and beer cans are being dumped in the adjoining property next to the stadium,” said another resident, Vishal Naik.
Frustrated by the continuing nuisance, Soares said he is in the process of filing a formal complaint with the authorities, demanding immediate action against the shop owner.
“We appeal to the police and excise department to crack down on this illegal activity before it gets further out of hand. The GFA too should intervene and verify what is happening right at their doorstep,” he added.
Residents say the situation has reached a breaking point, disturbing the peace and harmony of the locality.
“We are not against genuine businesses, but when a shop turns into a drinking adda and starts threatening the wellbeing of an entire neighbourhood, it cannot be tolerated,” remarked another resident who did not wish to be named.
